The bumpers, properly called cushions, are the rubber strips glued to the rails that balls bounce off. Rubber ages whether the table gets played or not. Heat, dry air, humidity swings, and plain time harden it, and a hardened cushion plays dead: balls thud off the rail instead of rebounding, banks come up short, and the table stops playing like itself.
The test is simple. Press a fingernail into the cushion nose. Healthy rubber gives slightly. Aged rubber feels like wood. You can also throw a ball firmly at a rail and count the rebounds: a table in good shape returns the ball three or four times across, a dead one barely two.
